Wellness Myth Buster

MYTH: “If you talk about stress, you're weak.”
FACT: Talking about it is strength. Be the example.

In law enforcement, we pride ourselves on being tough—physically, mentally, and emotionally. But somewhere along the way, a dangerous myth took root: that admitting stress, struggle, or burnout is a sign of weakness.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The reality is that every officer, at some point, feels the weight of the job—the long hours, the critical incidents, the sleepless nights, the things we carry home even when we try not to. Acknowledging that stress doesn’t make you soft. It makes you human.

Talking about what you're going through is not only healthy—it’s courageous. It breaks down the stigma that too often prevents officers from getting the help they need. Whether it's venting to a trusted partner, checking in with a peer support member, or simply taking a breath to say, “I’ve had a rough week,” you're showing strength, leadership, and integrity.

You can't lead from the shadows. Be the example.

At FOP Yuma Lodge #24, we encourage open, honest conversations about mental wellness. We support each other. We lift each other up. And we know that true strength comes from standing together, especially when the job gets heavy.
